About Us
Our Journey
Hello, I'm Ryan Kuhl the owner of Sand Ridge Beef. As a young boy I was always fascinated by the cattle in my parents and grandparent's feedlot and seeing the cows with their calves out in the pastures. When I was 6 or 7 years old, I was given an orphaned Hereford calf to take care of, and that's where my love for animals began. From elementary school through high school, I would buy one week old calves from local dairy farms and raise them until they were 400-500 pounds and would sell them to local feed lots. I also enjoyed raising chickens for the state FFA broiler contest every fall. I attended Michigan State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Agri-Science with an emphasis in Animal Science. I'm also a graduate of The Worldwide College of Auctioneering. During my time at MSU I worked at the University's Beef Cattle Research Farm and lived and worked at the Sheep Teaching and Research Farm. This is where I met my wife, Heather. She has a Bachelor's in Animal Science and is also a Licensed Veterinary Technician.
After graduating college and getting married we continued raising livestock while both of us worked full time jobs. We would buy feeder cattle at 400-500 pounds and fed them to a market weight of 1200-1300 pounds, selling as much for freezer beef as we could. We also had a small, registered herd of Angus and Sim-Angus cows in a partnership with my brother and a herd of registered Boer goats. As we had children and my brother got married and moved, there wasn't enough time for everything, so the cattle were sold, and we focused on the goats. As our five children (Avery, Brooklynn, Channing, Dustin and Emersynn) started getting old enough to show at the county fair, we started raising cattle again. Our pervious beef customers were thrilled that we could once again supply them with meat.
Our kids have exhibited many different species over the years which has led to the addition of pigs and the occasional meat chicken to the farm. Avery is a graduate of the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Orlando, Florida. He worked on a cattle ranch while attending school. After graduation he moved to Texas to work for a custom chopping, baling and manure hauling company. He has since moved back to Michigan to work on a local dairy doing the same jobs as he was doing in Texas along with helping on our farm.
Brooklynn graduated from the Bay City Area Fire Academy, EMT school and Delta College with an Associates in Fire Science and Early Childhood Education. Channing, Dustin and Emersynn are still in school. Dustin hopes to join the farm after high school.
We take great pride in raising high quality livestock and supplying our customers with meat that exceeds their expectations. We don't use any additional hormones or growth promoting products. Our animals are corn fed and finished to a desirable amount of inter-muscular and external fat. We carefully select animals that will meet or exceed our criteria for health, disposition and meat quality.
Thank you for visiting Sand Ridge Beef.
